42ND STREET MOON
42nd Street Moon was founded in 1993 by Greg MacKellan and Stephanie Rhoads and is nationally recognized for its
dedication to preserving the history and vitality of musical theatre by producing of lesser-known musicals including early
works by recognized composers, “one-hit wonders,” and other worthy, if largely forgotten, titles. Productions began as staged
readings, with minimal sets and costumes and with the actors holding their scripts during performances. They have evolved
into the fully realized performances you see today, but the core components of those early productions remain - the intimacy
of the space, the eschewing of microphones, and the focus on script and music over scenery and spectacle. The mission has
evolved to include more recent works and several regional and world premieres. Daren A.C. Carollo and Daniel Thomas
joined Moon in 2016, just in time to present the company’s twenty-fth season. 42ndstmoon.org

THE VOYAGE OF “ANYTHING GOES”
Despite being the composer/lyricist for twenty-ve Broadway shows, many of which featured songs that live on in the Great
American Songbook, only two Cole Porter shows remain in the conciousness of the average theatre-goer: KISS ME, KATE
(1948) and ANYTHING GOES (1934).
ANYTHING GOES was in a sense, created “backwards” - rather than having a show written, then cast, producer Vinton
Freedly decided to assemble his authors and stars, then created the show around all of them. This brought together Porter,
bookwriters P.G. Wodehouse and Guy Bolton, and stars Ethel Merman, William Gaxton, and Victor Moore. The original
plot invovled a bomb threat and a shipwreck, which was changed substantially partially due to a real-life cruise ship re.
Upon its debut in 1934, ANYTHING GOES was a hit, running for 420 performances (considered a long run for the time). In
spite of the show’s success, it did not receive a revival until 1962, and that was Off-Broadway (starring a young Hal Linden).
The producers of this revival took advantage of the vast catalog of Porters hits and interpolated “Let’s Mis-behave,” “Friend-
ship,” “It’s De-Lovely,” and “Take Me Back to Manhattan. This became the “ofcial” version performed by local theatres and
schools for several decades; and it wasn’t until the 1987 Broadway revival (starring Patti LuPone) that much of the show
returned to its 1934 roots (although “It’s De-Lovely” and “Friendship” remained in the score). The 2011 Sutton Foster-led
revival largely followed the 1987 version, and both this and the 1962 version remain available for production today.
A prominent sub-plot that persisted through all of these versions played on some racial tropes common in early 20th
century entertainment. 42nd Street Moon was given permission to make revisions to address this and some other anach-
ronistic elements; using the script from a 2019 production at Washington’s Arena Stage as a launching point, Moon has
crafted a version that retains the humor, spirit, and of course the music from all these productions while matching the
sensibilities of modern audiences.
