Rev. Walter Clark
Rev. Walter Clark is the minister of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Wayne County. He graduated from
Meadville Lombard seminary in 2016 and interned in Richmond and Newport News, Virginia. Upon being settled as
assistant minister at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, Virginia, Clark served for three years under the
guidance of Rev. Terasa Cooley before being called to Wooster, Ohio.
Clarks upbringing in the Christian faith laid the groundwork for his appreciation of diverse spiritual traditions
including Humanism, Paganism, Judaism, and most of the world’s religions, and his deep belief in the values of love and
inclusiveness rst led him to Unitarian Universalism through the Unitarian Universalist Church of Richmond, Virginia.
The ethos of Unitarian Universalism inspired Clark to work for justice, and he is a dedicated advocate for causes related
to gender and racial equality.
Clark resides in Wooster with his wife of over 25 years and their two teenage children.
Lamont Paris ’96
Lamont Paris ’96, head men’s basketball coach at the University of South Carolina and a nalist for the 2024 Werner
Ladder Naismith Men’s College Coach of the Year award, has been named Southeastern Conference (SEC) Coach of the
Year. Paris led his South Carolina team to a second-place SEC nish and a 13-5 conference record after seeing the team
picked to nish last in the league in the preseason.
Inspired by his Wooster roots on the court, in the classroom, and within the campus community, Paris has coached at
the collegiate level since 1997. His coaching career started at Wooster, with stops at DePauw University and Indiana
University of Pennsylvania before securing his rst NCAA Div. I assistant job at the University of Akron. Paris was on
sta with the Zips for the program’s 2009 Mid-American Conference title.
After building up a reputation as a recruiter and developer of talent, Paris was hired as the lead assistant coach at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Badgers averaged 27 wins per year during his seven-year tenure, headlined by
playing in the 2015 national championship game, reaching the Final Four in 2014, and playing in four NCAA Sweet 16s.
In 2017, Paris earned his rst head coaching job at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He went 87-72 in ve
seasons, including 65-29 over his nal three. In his nal season with the Mocs, Paris’ team went 27-8, won the Southern
Conference (SoCon) regular-season title, and secured a spot in the NCAA Tournament on a deep buzzer-beating
3-pointer in overtime of the SoCon Tournament championship. Paris has served as USCs head coach since March 2022.
The Fighting Scots 1996 business economics alumnus, whose Independent Study was titled, “Taxation of Sin: The Eects
of Excise Taxes on the Demand Function of Cigarettes,” played on Wooster teams that went 84-25, advanced to three
NCAA Div. III Championships, and won two North Coast Athletic Conference titles.
Rev. David A. Rice, Trustee
Rev. David A. Rice is pastor and head of sta at First Presbyterian Church of Wooster and a member of The College of
Wooster Board of Trustees. He grew up in Taiwan as a son of Presbyterian missionaries.
Rice is a former professional opera singer, performing in regional opera houses and concert halls across the U.S. and
at the opera house in Wuppertal, Germany, and as a guest artist in other German opera houses from 1989 to 1996. He
earned a bachelors degree in music and theater from North Park University in Chicago, and a Master of Music in voice
performance from Northwestern University.
After being called to ministry in the late 1990s, Rice earned a Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary.
From 2000 to 2014, he was pastor and head of sta at First Presbyterian Church in Anniston, Alabama. He was named
pastor and head of sta at First Presbyterian Church of Wooster in April 2014.
Rice is married to Karolyn, a musician and piano teacher, and they have two sons: Brendan, living and working in Rome,
Italy, and Brian, who works for University of Alabama Birmingham.

Academic Regalia
The gathering of The College of Wooster family is the expression of a
living tradition. The wearing of caps and gowns is an English custom
which goes back to the 12th century and is still used in many nations
today. Over the years, the apparel of scholars has evolved to differentiate
the degrees of learning and areas of study. From the gown, cap, tassel,
and hood, it is possible to distinguish the institution from which the
wearer graduated, the field of learning in which the degree was earned,
and the level of degree: bachelor’s, masters, or doctoral.
Gowns, which are typically black but are frequently quite colorful, fall in
straight lines from a fairly elaborate yoke. The level of degree is indicated
by the cut of the gown. The bachelor’s gown is relatively simple with
bell-shaped sleeves. The masters gown is somewhat fuller, and its sleeves
are longer and squared at the ends. The doctor’s gown has velvet panels
down the front and around the neck, and the bell-shaped sleeves are
decorated with three horizontal velvet bars.
Caps may be either mortarboard or tam in style, though generally the
tam is reserved for doctoral degrees. The tassel may be the color of the
major field of learning in which the degree has been granted, or the
tassel may be black for any degree. Gold tassels are worn only by doctors.
The hood is the most distinctive and colorful part of the academic
regalia. Hoods are lined with silk in the colors of the institution granting
the degree. The color of the velvet binding on the hood designates
the discipline in which the degree is heldwhite for Arts, Letters,
and Humanities; green for Medicine; pink for Music; dark blue for
Philosophy; golden yellow for Science; scarlet for Theology, etc. The
hood shows by its size, width of trimming, and shape, the level of the
highest degree held. Of the three hood styles, the doctor’s is the most
elaborate. The bachelor’s hood is rarely used, and doctor’s hoods are
slightly longer than master’s degree hoods.
Colleges and universities often add their own traditions to the gown. At
Wooster, a single old gold cord indicates departmental honors. Black and
gold cords indicate Phi Beta Kappa membership. Kente stoles symbolize
the rich history of domestic students of color, and the country flag stoles
represent the home country or identity of graduating seniors. Lavender
stoles acknowledge achievements and contributions of lesbian, gay,
bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual (LGBTQIA+), and ally
students to the College. Graduating seniors who are members of student
organizations and athletic teams may choose to wear graduation stoles.
Flowers for the 2024 Commencement have been given in memory of Esther Mae Graber ’34, director of food service from
1947 to 1970, and at the time of her retirement in June 1977, manager of The Wooster Inn.
