Rev. David A. Rice, Trustee
Rev. David A. Rice is pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Wooster and a member of The College of Wooster Board of
Trustees. He grew up in Taiwan as a son of Presbyterian missionaries.
Rev. Rice is a former professional opera singer, performing in regional opera houses and concert halls across the U.S. and
at the opera house in Wuppertal, Germany, and as a guest artist in other German opera houses from 1989-96. He earned a
bachelor’s in music and theater from North Park University in Chicago, and a Master of Music in voice performance from
Northwestern University.
After being called to ministry in the late 1990s, Rev. Rice earned a Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological
Seminary. From 2000-2014, he was pastor and head of staat First Presbyterian Church in Anniston, Alabama. He was
named pastor and head of sta at First Presbyterian Church of Wooster in April 2014.
He is married to Karolyn, a musician and piano teacher, and they have two sons: Brendan, living and working in Rome,
Italy, and Brian, who is working for Texas Tech University in Dallas, Texas.
Darius Scott Dixson ’13 pka “DIXSON
Darius Scott Dixson ’13, known as “DIXSON” professionally, is a singer, songwriter, and producer who plays 11
instruments. He stepped into the national spotlight in 2016 as part of Pharrell’s team on NBCs The Voice. Shortly after
he left the show, he was signed by record label Roc Nation and has since collaborated with notable musicians, including
Kim Burrell, Peter CottonTale, Chance The Rapper, Vic Mensa, Pharrell Williams, and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. He
also more recently worked with Justin Bieber on the acoustic version of the hit track, “Holy.” And in 2021, he wrote
and produced his rst solo album with Roc Nation, entitled Darling, releasing singles such as “Summertime.Fin,” “Aura,”
and “BIG BRAVE MAN”—a song dedicated to his father who passed away in 2019.
In 2022, DIXSON received an Oscar nomination in the Best Original Song category for the music and lyrics of “Be Alive”
from the motion picture King Richard, alongside Beyoncé. The song plays during the credits for the lm that focuses on the
story of the father of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams.
A Posse Scholar from Atlanta, DIXSON graduated from Wooster in 2013, with a self-designed major in arts and media
management. While at Wooster, he was part of several ensembles including the Wooster Chorus, The Wooster Fragments,
the Wooster Jazz Ensemble, and he served as the music director of his on-campus band, Freddie Cool. In 2010, he became
a brother of Xi Chi Psi and also a member of the Black Student Association. In 2011, DIXSON studied abroad in Paris,
concentrating in French business and fashion merchandising. As a student, he held internship roles at MTV, The National
Conference of Black Mayors, and was a founding team member of the streetwear brand, KITH.
He began his senior year at the peak of the SoundCloud era and worked with advisor Denise Bostdor, professor of
communication studies, to complete an Independent Study that examined how lm can be used to instruct independent
music artists on branding and promotion, including a short documentary called The Grey Area, a compilation of interviews
with independent music artists, music industry executives, music producers, songwriters, and entertainment lawyers
sharing his passion for educating independent music artists on the best practices in promotion and branding.
Rev. Enikö Ferenczy
Rev. Enikö Ferenczy, Ph.D., serves as Pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church, church in residence at The College
of Wooster. She loves exploring the intersection of faith and public life both in her ministry and personal life. A former
chemical engineer called into ministry, Ferenczy brings experience in interfaith grassroots justice ministry, teaching in a
variety of contexts, and work with refugees. She developed and led a refugee integration program within the Reformed
Church in Hungary and did her Ph.D. research on the church’s engagement with refugees and migrants. She was also
a participant in WCC’s Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme for Palestine and Israel (EAPPI) and is a passionate
advocate for reconciliation in the region. Ferenczy loves the outdoors, especially hiking around waterfalls. She grows a lot
of hot peppers and is ready to lead you through culinary experiments.
Ferenczy holds a chemical engineering degree from the University of Babes-Bolyai in Cluj, Romania, and earned her
Master of Divinity and Ph.D. degrees from Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, where she also served as
the international student advisor. “Beyond Borders: Toward a Migration-Conscious Theology of Mission for the Reformed
Church in Hungary,” is the title of her dissertation.

A tribute to Teague Curless ’22
Teague Curless, a member of this years graduating class who
passed away this past fall, is remembered as an exceptional student,
and wonderful peer and friend to many.
From Lexington, Kentucky, Teague was the son of Peter and
Mindy (North) Curless. At Wooster, Teague double majored
in mathematics and physics with near a 4.0 GPA. Teague was
passionate about nonlinear dynamics and studying patterns
and had expressed plans to pursue an advanced degree. He is
remembered by his advisors as “thoughtful, funny, and creative”
and “intrigued by many things.
In addition to excelling in the classroom, Teague worked as
a tutor and teaching assistant in the physics department and
served as a STEM Zone intern, supporting the academic success
of introductory STEM students from underrepresented groups.
He enjoyed the process of learning and deeply believed in
thoroughly understanding the fundamentals of mathematics and
physics. Although he ultimately wanted to pursue engineering,
he felt that a strong theoretical background and liberal arts
education were very important for his development. Teague was
excited and ready for his senior year at Wooster and planned to
study engineering at Washington University in St. Louis.
Teague cared deeply for the world’s welfare, and he hoped to
develop climate technologies that supported high-risk global
regions in his career.
Teague’s passions stretched beyond academics. He also enjoyed
reading, playing video games with friends, watching thought-
provoking movies, and pondering all ideas (big and small).
For those who knew him, Teague was loud, convicted, and creative.
His energy was undeniable. Teague’s friends were important
to him, and his family is extremely grateful for their role in
supporting him. He highly valued his meaningful relationships
with his teachers and professors, who helped shape his interests
and hone his ideas. Teague is deeply loved; he and his future
contributions to our society will be sorely missed.

Academic Regalia
The gathering of The College of Wooster family is the expression
of a living tradition. The wearing of caps and gowns is an English
custom which goes back to the twelfth century and is still used
in many nations today. Over the years the apparel of scholars has
evolved to differentiate the degrees of learning and areas of study.
From the gown, cap, tassel, and hood, it is possible to distinguish
the institution from which the wearer graduated, the field of
learning in which the degree was earned, and the level of degree:
bachelor’s, masters, or doctor’s.
Gowns, which are typically black but are frequently quite colorful,
fall in straight lines from a fairly elaborate yoke. The level of
degree is indicated by the cut of the gown. The bachelors gown
is relatively simple with bell-shaped sleeves. The master’s gown is
somewhat fuller, and its sleeves are longer and squared at the ends.
The doctors gown has velvet panels down the front and around
the neck, and the bell-shaped sleeves are decorated with three
horizontal velvet bars.
Caps may be either mortarboard or tam in style, though generally
the tam is reserved for doctoral degrees. The tassel may be the
color of the major field of learning in which the degree has been
granted, or the tassel may be black for any degree. Gold tassels are
worn only by doctors.
The hood is the most distinctive and colorful part of the academic
regalia. Hoods are lined with silk in the colors of the institution
granting the degree. The color of the velvet binding on the hood
designates the discipline in which the degree is held white
for Arts, Letters, and Humanities; green for Medicine; pink for
Music; dark blue for Philosophy; golden yellow for Science; scarlet
for Theology, etc. The hood shows by its size, width of trimming,
and shape the level of the highest degree held. Of the three hood
styles, the doctors is the most elaborate. The bachelors hood is
rarely used, and doctor’s hoods are slightly longer than masters
degree hoods.
Colleges and universities often add their own traditions to the gown.
At Wooster, a single old gold cord indicates departmental honors.
Black and gold cords indicate Phi Beta Kappa membership. Kente
stoles symbolize the rich history of domestic students of color, and
the country flag stoles represent the home country or identity of
graduating seniors. Lavender stoles acknowledge achievements
and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer,
intersex, asexual (LGBTQIA+), and ally students to the College.
Flowers for the 2022 Commencement have been given in memory of Esther Mae Graber ’34, Director of Food Service
from 1947 to 1970, and at the time of her retirement in June 1977, manager of The Wooster Inn.
