Degree Progress for Pre-Nursing Majors Rev. 6/6/2019
Bachelor of Science in Nursing Basic (NRSGBS01)
In order to be considered for admission to the Nursing major, CSULB students must be declared as Pre-Nursing students. Pre-
Nursing students must complete a series of prerequisite courses: GE Oral Communication, GE Written Communication, GE Critical
Thinking, approved GE Statistics, BIOL 201, BIOL 207, BIOL 208, and CHEM 140. Each course must be completed with a C” or better
grade; when all prerequisites are completed the GPA for the prerequisite courses must be a “B” or better (3.0 or better).
Applicants to the Nursing major are normally admitted by the time they reach junior standing and must apply before they have
earned 75 Timely Graduation units. Students who have earned 75 or more Timely Graduation units at CSULB are not eligible to
apply to Nursing. Pre-Nursing students should note that withdrawing or repeating courses to improve their grades or GPA will
result in poor academic progress and will likely make them ineligible for admission.
Degree Progress Rules for Pre-Nursing Majors (NRSGPR00U1)
Pre-Nursing majors must complete the following requirements within four semesters of being admitted to CSULB. Pre-Nursing
students who do not meet these Degree Progress Rules must meet with an Academic Advisor to discuss their degree progress and
explore resources for declaring a new major.

as a combined GPA of 3.0 or better in these prerequisite courses.

and approved GE Statistics.
Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of a 3.25.
Lower-Division CSULB Students Wishing to Declare Pre-Nursing Major
Current CSULB lower-division students wishing to declare the Pre-Nursing major must complete the following courses by the end of
their second semester with a “B” or better: Written Communication, Oral Communication, Critical Thinking, approved B4 statistics,
SOC 100 and PSY 100, as well as have a combined GPA of 3.5 or better in these prerequisite courses.
Upper-Division students are not eligible for Pre-Nursing.
Applying to the Nursing Program
Pre-Nursing students must apply to become Nursing majors no later than the beginning of the fifth semester. Candidates must
complete the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) and should visit the ATI Testing website to learn how to take the TEAS. In
reviewing applications, a personal profile is developed for each applicant based on GPA in prerequisite courses and the TEAS.
Candidates with the highest profile scores are selected for admission. To view the application pool statistics from previous
semesters, check out the Undergraduate Handouts and Documents on the School of Nursing website.
PRE-NURSING GUIDELINES REV. 6/6/19
1. Students who have fulfilled a prerequisite GE category or science (grade of C or better) cannot take a second class in that
prerequisite GE category or retake a science class at a community college in an attempt to raise their grade and GPA for
admission to the Nursing program. Only a passing grade (C or better) in the first course taken in the category will be
considered for admission to Nursing.
2. Students are allowed to repeat a failed class for grade forgiveness as stated in the CSULB Repetition of Courses Policy. Students
should note that withdrawing or repeating courses to improve their grades or GPA may result in a failure to meet the Degree
Progress Rules and will likely make them ineligible for admission to Nursing.
3. Students should not purposely fail or withdraw from a class if they are earning a “C” so they can repeat it for a better grade.
Students repeating classes often results in failure to meet the Degree Progress Rules and will likely make them ineligible for
admission to Nursing.
4. Students who have AP credit in ENGL 100, STAT 108, or STAT 118 will have the prerequisite GE GPA determined by the grades
earned in the other prerequisite GE categories. AP credit in any other math class will not be accepted by Nursing.
5. Students do not need to take any additional science classes other than the four required prerequisites (CHEM 140, BIOL 201,
BIOL 207, & BIOL 208) to satisfy GE requirements in area B1, B2 and B3. The 17 required prerequisite science units will satisfy
both the GE Life Science and GE Physical Science requirements.
6. Students should take PSY 100 and SOC 100 to meet the Social Sciences and Citizenship (D3) GE requirement. These are
important prerequisites to nursing courses, if admitted.
7. Students are encouraged to complete as many GE requirements as possible prior to starting the Nursing program so they can
concentrate on their Nursing classes once they are accepted into the program.
8. Pre-Nursing students may only apply to Nursing twice. Applicants to the nursing major are normally admitted by the time they
reach junior standing and must apply before they have earned 75 Timely Graduation units (including in-progress units).
Students who have earned 75 or more Timely Graduation Units at CSULB are not eligible to apply to Nursing. Pre-Nursing
students should note that withdrawing or repeating courses to improve their grades or GPA will result in poor academic
progress and will likely make them ineligible for admission.
