Capital Area Greenway System

The Capital Area Greenway (CAG) system is a

network of linear parks, located along rivers,

creeks and streams, that provide opportunities

for conservation, recreation and connecting

people to Raleigh’s parks and other community

features. Greenway trails can also follow along

utility and railroad corridors when natural

corridors are unavailable to make a trail

connection. The system has over 100 miles of

paved and unpaved trails and over 270 miles

of protected stream corridors.

Greenway trails typically include a 10-foot

wide asphalt path that can be used for

recreational activities such as hiking, biking,

The framework of the CAG system includes

Walnut Creek, Crabtree Creek and their

tributaries to the west of the Neuse River

and Richland Creek, Harris Creek and their

tributaries to the east of the Neuse River.

Many of the city’s major ecological features

can be experienced in their natural state

along these water courses. We invite you to

experience this network of interconnected

trails whether for it be for recreation, wildlife

viewing, and commuting.

Greenway Volunteer Program

The Raleigh Police Department in partnership

with the Parks, Recreation and Cultural

Resources Department coordinates a

Greenway Volunteer Program for the safety,

security, and protection of greenway users,

park resources, and the surrounding natural

areas. Any citizen interested in helping keep

a watchful eye on our growing greenway trails

by reporting back to Parks ofﬁcials any breach

in safety, security or maintenance concerns

is invited to apply to become a Greenway

Volunteer. Questions about the City of Raleigh

Greenway Volunteer Program can be directed

• Bicyclists, skaters, and skate boarders

should approach pedestrians with caution

and pass on the left

• Always show courtesy to other trail users

• Share the trail

• Give audible signal when passing

• Yield when entering and crossing trails

• Trail users should stay to right, unless

passing on left

Rules

• Obey posted rules and regulations

• Trail hours are from dawn to dusk

• Speed limit on trails is 10 mph

• Consumption of alcoholic beverages

is prohibited

• Motorized vehicles are prohibited on trails

• Fires are prohibited on trails and in parks

• It is prohibited to remove, destroy, or

damage any plant life or property

• Pets must be on a leash

• Owners must remove all pet waste

• It is prohibited to kill, trap, or harm wildlife

• Horses are prohibited on trails

• All trail users under the age of 16 are

required to wear a safety helmet when

using a bike, skates, scooter or any other

non-motorized vehicle

• Smoking is prohibited on trails and is

permitted in designated areas of parks

• Weapons prohibited except those permitted

in NCGS 14-415.23 (RCC Sec. 9-2021)

• Camping is prohibited in City parks and

greenway areas unless otherwise permitted
