Update on DC Department of Motor Vehicles
(DC DMV) Operating Status during COVID-19
Emergency
What is our operating status?
DC DMV remains operational with most necessary services provided online. The Southwest Service Center
will operate on an “Appointment Only” basis through Phase 1, and customers may only schedule
appointments for the following limited services: First Time License and REAL ID Conversions; First Time Title
and Registrations (no renewals), and Knowledge Testing. Road tests and inspections will not be available.
All other DC DMV locations are currently closed through Phase 1. Customers are encouraged to use online
services at dmv.dc.gov.
How does this impact what we do?
DC DMV has extended the expiration date for all documents expiring March 1 through the duration
of the health emergency, including driver licenses, identification cards, vehicle registrations,
inspections, ticket payments and ticket adjudication responses, until 45 days after the health
emergency concludes.
All driver licenses, vehicle registrations, and vehicle inspections scheduled to expire have been
granted a waiver without penalty until DC DMV reopens at full operating capacity.
All tickets will remain in their current status for the duration of the health emergency, and no
additional penalties will be added during this period. In the interim, the public is encouraged to
request adjudication and pay citations online.
All driver license suspensions and revocations will be paused until further notice.
Southwest Service Center open by “appointment only” and only the following in-person services will
be made available through Phase 1: First Time License and REAL ID Conversions; First Time Title and
Registrations (no renewals), and Knowledge Testing.

o Georgetown Service Center
