Flight Students Required Documents
Students are required under our FAA-approved Training Course Outline and our Flight Operations Manual to have the
following documents before the start of flight training:
1. FAA Flight Medical with 1st or 2nd Class Privileges
2. Proof of Citizenship (per TSA requirements)
FAA Flight Medical
You will need to get your FAA Flight Medical certificate from an FAA Aviation Medical Examiner. We strongly
recommend you secure your FAA Medical certificate prior to arriving at ERAU for Orientation. The Prescott area
has only a few local Aviation Medical Examiners; waiting for an appointment until you arrive may delay your flight training.
Go to www.faa.gov/pilots/amelocator
to search for an examiner in your area.
You must have at least 1st or 2nd Class Medical privileges to start flying.
o Although only a 3rd Class is required for flight training per the FAA, ERAU requires 1st or 2nd class
privileges to ensure that all students start their flight training with the minimum requirements to use their
Commercial Pilot certificate when they are done with all their flight courses.
You will be required to fill out a MedXPress application prior to attending your physical examination at
medxpress.faa.gov
.
If you already have a Private Pilot certificate or higher, then we will need to see the certificate during orientation
and you are still required to have a First or Second class Airman Medical Certificate to start flying.
If you have a certificate that says 1st or 2nd Class and it is older than 12 months, you now only have 3rd Class
privileges and must get a new certificate to start flying at ERAU.
After starting training you need only maintain a valid medical certificate (i.e. not sustain some kind of disqualifying
injury) for the remainder of your flight training, regardless of the date of issuance.
Proof of Citizenship
Per the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), we are required to have documentation proving citizenship prior to
commencing any flight training. For U.S. Citizens, this is a one-time requirement at the beginning that will be valid as long
as you are a flight student at ERAU. At orientation you must provide either:
1. A valid United States passport (no photocopies)
OR
2. An original birth certificate (no photocopies) AND a Government issued ID (usually a driver’s license or military
ID)
We will make copies at orientation and return the originals to you. Without these documents on file, we cannot legally start
any flight training with a student.
International students should contact Lori Brimhall in Flight Records at brimhal@erau.edu
or 928-777-4327 for your
specific requirements.
Do I Need a Student Pilot Certificate to Begin Training at ERAU?
No, your student pilot certificate is not required to begin flight training but must be obtained prior to your first stage check
and first solo flight.
When you begin training with your Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) at ERAU, they will help you apply for your
student pilot certificate. In advance of applying for this certificate, your CFI will request that you register with
IACRA
(the FAA’s web-based certification/rating application system) if you have not yet done so.
OR (optional)
You may make an appointment with your local Flight Standards District Office
(FSDO) or Designated Pilot
Examiner and ask them to issue you a Student Pilot certificate.
