JOB SUMMARY
The Director of Managed Care Contracting is responsible for the direction and leadership of operational, financial,
programmatic and employee related activities for Managed Care Contracting. This includes establishing, meeting and
continuously monitoring the goals and objectives while maintaining alignment with the strategic goals and objectives
for UW Health. While the range of duties and responsibilities is broad and varied, the position’s major responsibility is
directing the day-to-day operations, budgeting, financial management, and human resource management. The
Director works closely with a variety of stakeholders, coordinating the activities of Managed Care Contracting across
the enterprise.
The Director is responsible for continued development and maintenance of contractual relationships with health plans
and payers. These payer contracts account for the majority of UW Health revenues and are critical to the financial
health of UW Health. The Director operates with significant autonomy in maintaining and increasing the contracted
business, while negotiating rates that enable UW Health to meet its financial objectives and strategic objectives.. The
Director serves in a leadership role in addressing a wide, complex spectrum of critical management issues, and must
be innovative in developing new partnership structures and reimbursement methods to retain existing contracted
relationships,
Responsible for the initiation, development, negotiation, and monitoring of contracts on behalf of UW Health. The
Director negotiates directly with VPs, Medical Directors, CEOs, CFOs, attorneys, and other executives from these
external entities and supports staff in their negotiation efforts. Negotiations include discussion on payment rate
and structure, and all aspects of contract language.
The Director engages with a wide variety of internal and external contracts, as the contracts include providers
beyond just UWHC and UWMF, but also UW Health NIL, UnityPoint Meriter, UW Health Rehabilitation Hospital
and other UW Affiliates.
Providing UW Health senior management staff insight and knowledge in order to facilitate net revenue budgeting,
long term planning, and the strategic planning of major hospital programs or significant clinical programs. The
Director will interpret and provide decision support information and reports to senior management staff.
Ensure that the Managed Care team has prioritized and allocated resources for reports and analysis of contract
performance, including standard monthly and periodic reporting as well as adhoc data queries.
Manage communication to all the various providers and affiliates. Ensure resources and tools are utilized to share
key contract information regarding operational terms, legal requirements and rates with operational and revenue
cycle teams at the various provider entities.
Coordinating efforts to integrate and align UW Health contracting efforts among newly acquired organizations and
for new partnerships between UW Health and organizations where UW Health will serve as the contracting agent.
The Director of Managed Care Contracting serves as the programmatic and operational leader for Managed Care
Contracting and is responsible to the Vice President, Managed Care Contracting and works closely with UW Health
employees, physicians and leaders.

Prepares and delivers reports to operational leadership outlining progress toward meeting annual goals and
objectives, to include performance related to finance, clinical activity, quality, safety, marketing, and human
resources.
Financial Manager

for staff participation in improvement work activities.
Ensures effective facilitation of improvement teams and development of leadership skills to ensure overall
effectiveness of the meetings.
Organizes and prioritizes time and resources to manage efficiency. Appropriately delegates.
Remains current of new trends and best practices and incorporates into Managed Care Contracting practices and
programs.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject area such as Accounting, Business
Administration, Finance, Health Care
Master’s degree in a relevant subject area such as Business Administration or Health
Care Administration
Work Experience
Five (5) years relevant experience in the management of managed care contracting
experience or provider network experience in an insurance or health care setting
Experience in a large academic or complex health program that included Managed
Care experience.
