Location and Area
Macau (Macao) is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China currently. It is
located on the southeastern coast of China. Macao's territory consists of a peninsula and two islands
called Taipa and Coloane in the Pearl River Delta of Guangdong Province.
Time
Macao is eight hours ahead of GMT.
Population
Macao's population is 95% Chinese and 5% Portuguese, Europeans and from other countries.
Language
Chinese and Portuguese are the official languages with Cantonese being the most widely spoken
language. English is generally used in trade, tourism and commerce.
Currency
The Pataca (MOP$) is Macao's official currency.
(MOP$) Banknotes have 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 Patacas.
(MOP$) Coins have 10, 20 and 50 avos, 1, 2, 5 and 10 Patacas.
In general, the exchange rate between US Dollars and Patacas is roughly 8 Patacas = 1 US Dollar. The
exchange rate between HK$ and MOP$ is around HK$100.00 = MOP$103.20.
Currency Exchange
Foreign currency can be easily exchanged to Patacas in hotels, banks and authorized exchange
dealers located all over the city.
Credit Cards
Most credit cards can be used in hotels, shops and restaurants.
Electricity
Macao's electricity supply is at 220V, 50Hz , which follows the system used in Hong Kong, with power
plugs also following the Hong Kong style: three pinned plugs with square or round pins.
Weather
In winter (January to March) and experience mild temperatures averaging 16˚C (60˚F) with lots of
sunshine. Sometimes the temperature may drop below 10
o
C (50˚F). Jackets and umbrellas are
recommended during this period.
Getting to Macao
Fly to Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) - http://www.hongkongairport.com/eng/index.html
Fly in to Hong Kong International Airport, one of the largest global airline hubs, and go directly to the
SkyPier (avoiding the need to clear immigration in Hong Kong). Take a ferry to one of the peninsula's
two ferry terminals, a jaunt that takes a mere 45 to 50 minutes.

Fly directly into Macau International Airport, and be at The Sands Venetian Macao Hotel in less than
ten minutes, courtesy of a free shuttle bus service.

The Cotai Water Jet Ferry service also runs regular crossings directly from Hong Kong and Kowloon.

Use the airport express train (instead of bus 11) if you do not mind a 1km or so walk between the
express train stations and the ferry terminals in either Kowloon or Hong Kong Island. All are easy to find
on Google Maps.

Do you Need A VISA to enter Macau?
A Visa is not required for most participants traveling to Macau. However we recommend visiting the

How can you obtain a VISA to enter Macau?
A Macau visa can be obtained through the Embassies/Consulates of the PRC and should be used
within its validity.
When should you apply for a VISA to enter Macau?
Visitors may also apply for an entry permit or visa upon arrival at the immigration checkpoint. However,
visitors from certain countries are required to obtain a visa in advance before their trip to Macao. For
