WOW! – Namo Amida Butsu BY REV. HARRY GYOKYO BRIDGE
I DROVE TO FRESNO RECENTLY
to guest speak at the Fresno Betsuin.
The last time I drove down to that area
was at least five years ago – I haven’t
been traveling nearly as much as I used
to before the pandemic. I decided to
leave early Sunday morning, rather
than spend the night. There was very
little trac, so the drive was fairly
relaxing. I made sure to have several
CDs to help me enjoy the trip!
I decided to take 580 to 99. If you
have ever driven this route, there is a
section where you switch to Route 205
and then Route 120 through Manteca
and then finally Route 99. There are
some bridges on the left as you go
through Mossdale/Lathrop. When I
first saw them, I either thought or said
out loud, “Wow!” This was immediately
followed by “Namandabu, Namandabu.
My memories are a bit vague, but
I realized what had happened and
thought about it a little bit at the time,
and more again later.
We often only say nembutsu when
it is “scripted” – for example, during
chanting, or repeating after the minis-
ter. But there is another kind of nem-
butsu, the spontaneous nembutsu ut-
tered during ordinary life. I’m not sure
why I said “Wow” – part of it was that
those particular bridges always catch
my eye (you see them on the way
back from Stockton as well), so seeing

WE HAD ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL
bazaar this year, or so I was told.
I wasn’t there! Just two days before, I
tested positive for Covid. What terrible
timing! I felt bad that I was not able to
lend a hand at church with the many
things that were needed to set up and
prepare for the patrons that came to
our popular event.
Many of you remember before the
pandemic, it was a two-day bazaar. But
because the work was hard and tiring
and it was becoming more and more
dicult to get the necessary help to
cover two days, the bazaar became a
one-day event. Despite the wonderful
help of many volunteers, it was hard to
get enough people. And for some, it
was getting dicult to do the physical
work that we were able to do 10, 15, or

Obon is the season in which we express our gratitude to loved ones who have

Join us for this special event on Sunday, August 4th.

Chiba, Japan. She has been a minister at the San Jose Betsuin since August, 2019.

them again after several years was
significant. But I think it was also be-
cause I was going to a temple that I
haven’t visited in a long time, and was
going to see Dharma friends in per-
son for the first time in a while – thus
“Namandabu, Namandabu,” an abbre-
viated version of the nembutsu, Namo
Amida Butsu.
Maybe Namo Amida Butsu can
also be understood as “WOW” –
whatever brought that WOW to mind.
Wow, I’m not alone in this world! Wow,
I exist because of the eorts and kind-
ness of so many others. Wow, despite
being a lazy, self-centered person,
I can become a Buddha. No, WOW,
BECAUSE I am a lazy, self-centered
person, I WILL be born in the Pure
Land and become a Buddha! But it’s
not because of my own eorts, it is
because of the Vow of Great Wisdom
& Compassion of Amida Buddha.
We have a big opportunity to
experience and express this wonder
and appreciation this month – OBON!
Our Festival & Obon Dance will be on
Saturday, August 3, and our Hatsubon
& Obon Services will be on Sunday,
August 4. Hatsubon, the first Obon
Service for those who have passed
away this past year, is at 9:30 am, and
then the Obon Service will be at 10:30
am. Our guest speaker for the Obon
Service will be Rev. Etsuko Mikame
from the San Jose Betsuin. n

MANY THANKS TO OUR SANGHA
members, their families, and friends
of BCO for their support of our Ba-
zaar and Food Festival on Saturday,
June 15! It was a sunny and warm day,
perfect for our Sangha community to
enjoy time together, catching up with
each other, laughing, and reminiscing.
This is what makes Bazaar special!
We had a very successful event!
We sold out of all our food items and
have received some nice comments
about our delicious food items. This
reflects the care and commitment
to excellence of our Sangha mem-
bers and friends of the Sangha who
dedicated many hours to prepare our
menu and sta our booths. The large
number of volunteers makes it dicult
to list names individually. However, it
goes without saying that this was a
consummate team eort from a spir-
ited and energetic BCO community.
It takes a large “village” of Sang-
ha leaders to make Bazaar happen. I
wish to express my deepest gratitude
to the team who spent long hours
planning and overseeing the many
dierent facets of Bazaar. This team
includes Rev. Bridge, Rev. Endo, Keiju
Terada, Norman Yoshida, Kathy Teru-
saki, Patti Hisaoka, Jean Kawata, Do-
ris Okano, Brian Nagata, John Mina-
moto, Ron Nomura, Ed Minamoto,
Don Kaneshige, Carol Thunen, Dana
Hiramoto, June Masuyama, Donna
Castro, Melyssa Minamoto, and Jo-
emy Ito-Gates. Their wisdom and
guidance were instrumental in making
Bazaar a huge success.
It was exciting to see the Gift
Shop, including many hand-crafted
items made by OBWA and Momijikai
members, a popular destination of
our guests. The Silent Auction had
some wonderful items for bid and
BCO wishes to thank the winning bid-
ders and many businesses and indi-
viduals for their generous donations.
Each time I walked by the chil-
dren’s games, sponsored by the Dhar-
ma School, the booths were bustling
with activity. It was extra special to
see all the smiling faces, enjoying
the games and, of course, the prize
booth! Our thanks to the Dharma
School teachers, students, families,
and Jr YBA! I also wish to express our
appreciation to the Youth Club play-
ers and families for bussing tables and
helping in the kitchen, along with the
volunteers from Gakuen for stang
one of our booths.
On behalf of the BCO Board of
Directors, we are so grateful to every-
one who helped for your unwavering
support of BCO and the Bazaar and
Food Festival! n

Momijikai News BY KAREN HASHIMOTO
JUNE 6, 2024
The service began with chanting Ju-
seige. Rev. Bridge then showed pic-
tures of former and present members
of Momijikai. The principal person in
these photos was Jean Nakazono who
sadly passed away recently. Jean was
such an important member/leader of
Momijikai for many years.
Patty then led us in yoga exer-
cises to help improve our balance,
to help our muscles be more flexible
and to help our brains pay better at-
tention to whatever we do. Paying at-
tention is vital to everything we do
– everything!
We all enjoyed a Japanese lunch
of an assortment of sushi, teriyaki
chicken, gyoza, and cucumber suno-
mono. We ended this delicious lunch
with ice cream and cookies. Our
lunch was spent enjoying time with
friends, talking and talking… n

20 years ago, and has now become
a challenge. It made me think about
how sometimes we take things for
granted, that the bazaar will be there,
open and available for people to en-
joy.
Some of the younger or newer
temple members may not be fully
aware of what it takes to put on a
bazaar or other temple event. I came
up with a list of tasks for the bazaar
and I’m sure I’m leaving some out, be-
cause I don’t know EVERYTHING that
goes on for this event. Here they are:
Set up booths and tents, cook chick-
en, print and sell rae tickets, BBQ
pit setup, BBQ cooking, get permits,
make signs, get up early to cook rice,
bake cookies and kuri manju at tem-
ple weeks in advance, cook the udon
noodles & make the dashi, pick the
bones out of the saba, slice/dice the
many ingredients, make the teriyaki
marinade, clean the chicken & mari-
nate them, setup electronic point-of-
sale devices, keep track of the money,
put food into the containers for sale,
get volunteers to bring in crafts for
sales, etc. It takes an army!
Special thanks go to Jon Takaga-
ki for once again chairing the bazaar.
The event was successful due largely
to his leadership, guidance, and many
hours. Thanks also go to the OBWA,
BCO Board members, Youth Club,
Dharma School teachers and stu-
dents, Jr. YBA, the temple oce, our
ministers, Rev. Harry Bridge and Rev.
Michael Endo, friends of BCO, and to
the BCO Boyz (Ron Nomura, John
Minamoto, and Jon Takagaki) who
do much of the prep during the week
prior to the bazaar. Much appreciation
and gratitude to all.
So, another opportunity to help
and support BCO is coming up. The
BCO Obon Festival will be soon upon
us! It will be Saturday, August 3. The
Hatsubon and Obon Services will be
the next day, Sunday, August 4. Once
again, we look forward to your sup-
port. Please contact Jon Takagaki or
the BCO oce, if you are available to
help on Friday and/or Saturday. Thank
you!
