economic factors that influence their status and
overall well-being, Africana Studies provides
students the opportunity to engage in research
and develop a practical understanding of issues of
social justice in communities, institutions and social
policies. In addition to offerings at the graduate level,
the department plays a critical role in the African
American Public Humanities Initiative.
ANTHROPOLOGY
The DEPARTMENT OF ANTHROPOLOGY offers
students a comparative, cross-cultural and
broad-based perspective on the human
condition both past and present. Integrating

Raven Press, the University’s own experimental
letterpress printing facility, which provides for a
unique and immersive experience in the art.
HISTORY OF AFRICANA STUDIES
AT THE UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE
In the spring of 1968, the Black Student Union at the University
of Delaware occupied the Student Center for a two-day period
of protest and presented a list of demands to the University’s
administration. These demands included an increase in the number
of Black faculty members and the establishment of a Black Studies
Program. In April of 1969, President E.A. Trabant instructed Provost
John Shirley to appoint a Black Studies Program Committee charged with
“implementing an appropriate Black Studies Program...leading eventually to a major in that
area.” A minor in what is now called Africana Studies was first offered in 1971. In the fall of 2007,
UD established an Africana Studies major.

HOW TO SUPPORT CAS
LEADERSHIP
Members of the College of Arts and Sciences are dedicated artists, scholars, scientists and professionals
who will go on to create, lead, invent and mentor others. In supporting our incredible and talented CAS
community—through student scholarships, graduate fellowships, faculty support, programming and
cutting-edge facilities—CAS donors support extraordinary student experiences while expanding UD’s
impact on the world.
Key areas of philanthropic impact include funding for:
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING: Our students rely on internships and hands-on learning experiences to build
their resumes, expand their knowledge and broaden their horizons. Your gift makes a difference by
providing critical support to help students access these life-changing opportunities.
FACULTY SUPPORT: Faculty are critical to the success of our students and the University as a whole.
Your gift can help CAS recruit, retain and recognize its outstanding faculty and continue to bring in the
minds that will cultivate our students and tackle the challenges of tomorrow.
CAREER READINESS: Through mentorship, instruction and access to unique resources and learning
opportunities, CAS helps students turn their ambitions into opportunities. In supporting career readiness
in CAS, you can encourage students to pursue their passions and connect with key resources so that
they can find their own road to success.
SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT: CAS is committed to creating a transformative learning experience for all
students, engaging them with new ideas, new environments, new technology and new perspectives.
Your gift to establish an endowed scholarship or support an existing one can help the college and UD
fulfill its mission of providing a world-class education for all.
Philanthropic support for the College of Arts and Sciences through Delaware First: The Campaign for
the University of Delaware, with a gift to one the above opportunities or elsewhere in the college, will
enhance education, scholarship, research and innovation. Together, with donor support, we can open
doors to change lives and communities.
For more information, contact Doug Kleintop, assistant vice president for colleges and programs, at
302-831-0612 or klein[email protected], or learn how you can make an immediate impact through an online gift.
