Hi kids! Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo
Do You Know What To Say At Mass?
This booklet was made especially for you
so you can join in with everyone in saying
special prayers. I know what you are
thinking - it’s very hard to learn. Well,
this is going to make it easy and fun!
Follow the Mass below and whenever you
see words in RED that is what you say.
Ready?!
Before Mass
This is a good time to greet friends or sit quietly to be ready for all that you will
see next. The church bell ringing is the signal to stand up. We begin with a SONG to celebrate!
Take notice of who enters the church while we sing. Everyone has a part to play! We sing from
the numbered hymns in the thicker hymnal so listen for the number!
Greetings
- We make the sign of the cross while the priest says, “In the name of the Father,
the Son, the Holy Spirit” and we say “Amen” which means, “Yes, I believe!”. To begin the Mass,
the priest will say “The Lord be with you”. We respond, “And with your spirit”. This is the
greeting of the church when Monsignor and the parish recognize God With Us through the Holy
Spirit. We remember any mistakes we have made throughout the week and say we are sorry for
them. We repeat after the priest “Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy.”
Another word for mercy is kindness. When the priest finishes with his prayer we respond
“Amen.
Gloria
- This is a very old hymn used to begin the Mass by thanking God and SINGING about
our very special God the Father, Jesus His Son, and the Holy Spirit in us.
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people, people of goodwill.
We praise You; we bless You, we adore You, we glorify You,
we give You thanks for Your great glory,
Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.
Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God,
Lamb of God, Son of the Father,
You take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us;
You take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer;
You are seated at the right hand of the Father,
have mercy on us.
For You alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You
alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father. Amen.”
Opening Prayer
- The priest will say “We bow our heads in prayer”… for the topic of the day and
will finish with “forever and ever” and we say “Amen”. We may sit down.
Sign of Peace
- When the priest prays for peace he ends with “forever and ever” and we respond
“Amen”. The priest says: “The peace of the Lord be with you always”. We say: “And with your
spirit.” We wave and smile to wish each other peace. We may say, “peace be with you.
Lamb of God
- We sing “Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away
the sins of the world, grant us peace.” Jesus is referred to as the lamb of God, symbolic of the
most perfect sacrifice. We say this in memory of how He paid for all our sins.
Invitation to Communion
- When the priest says “Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him who takes
away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb”. We say “Lord, I
am not worthy that You should enter under my roof, only say the word and my soul shall be
healed.” We recognize that we are not pure, we make mistakes, but that God can cleanse us and
prepare us to receive the Eucharist.
Communion
- The priest or Eucharistic minister will say “The Body of Christ.” Our response is,
“Amen. Place the host in your mouth immediately. We are permitted to chew the Eucharist
because it is a sacred meal. It is food for our soul. When we return to our seats, we kneel and
give thanks for all God has given us. This is a time of quiet prayer for everyone. When the priest
says, “Let us pray”, we stand up for the Closing Prayer When the priest says, “through Christ our
Lord” we say “Amen”.
Concluding Rite
Blessing
- When the priest says “The Lord be with you”. We say, “And with your spirit”. The
priest says, “May almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit” and we
respond “Amen”. The priest will end the Mass and ask us to go forth in peace. We make the sign
of the cross and respond, “Thanks be to God”. This is our final thanks for the gift of the Mass,
our church, and God’s intimate presence with us during this time. We SING a numbered hymn one
last time to celebrate. We are sent into the world as followers of Jesus. We have been fed by
the experience of those with us, the church gathered together, by the Word proclaimed and
broken open, and by the Eucharist. Now it is time to go and transform these words and actions
into the actions of our lives.
So now you know what to say when you are at church.
Feel free to use this at church and read off the
paper so that you are participating during mass
and praying with everyone else!
See you next week!

Liturgy of the Word
First and Second Readings
- When these special stories from the Bible finish with “This is
the Word of the Lord” we respond with “Thanks be to God.” The first reading is from the
Old Testament and the second reading is from the New Testament. We thank God for his
Word.
Psalm
- Psalms is one of the books from the Bible. We SING it in between the first and
second readings. Look for the message in what we sing that matches the readings! We sing
the numbered psalm from the thinner Cantate Deo book. We repeat what the psalmist sings
first.
Gospel
- We stand up for the Gospel next and SING “Alleluia” (which means Thank you,
God!). The priest will say "The Lord be with you”. We respond, “And with your spirit”. “Listen
to a reading from the Gospel according to Matthew / Mark / Luke / John”, we respond:
“Glory to you, Lord”. We make a cross on our forehead, on our mouth at our lips, and over
our heart at our chest. This is a way to mark the importance of what we are about to hear
and invite His Word into our mind, our voice, and our hearts.
Gospel Closing & Reflection
- When the Gospel is complete, the
priest will say “This is the Gospel of the Lord” and we respond,
“Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ”. Here we thank Jesus, as the
reading is focused on His life here on earth. Then we sit down
and listen to an explanation of the Bible readings from the priest.
Profession of Faith
Now we stand up and say what we believe together.
“I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible
and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father
before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not
made, consubstantial with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us men and for
our salvation He came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin
Mary and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate, He suffered
death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He
ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in
glory to judge the living and the dead and His kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and
the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through
the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, Catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the
forgiveness of sins, and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the
world to come. Amen.”
Praying for Others
- This is when we pray for many different people. Listen for the
sentence we will all repeat together such as “Lord, hear our prayer”. The priest says the
final prayer and then we respond “Amen. We sit down while gifts are gathered and SING a
numbered hymn.
Liturgy of the Eucharist
Invitation to Prayer
- We stand up to thank God now and pray over our gifts of bread and
wine that are offered along with our gifts we give in the collection baskets. When the priest
says: “Pray that our sacrifice is acceptable to God, the Almighty Father”. We say, “May the
Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands, for the praise and glory of His name, for our good
and the good of all His holy Church.
Eucharistic Prayer
- When the priest says, “The Lord be with you”. We say, “And with your
spirit”. The priest says, “Lift up your hearts”. We say, “We lift them up to the Lord”, Priest:
“Let us give thanks to the Lord our God”. We say, “It is right and just”. Here we offer our
heart and thanks to the Lord together.
Holy
We SING this cheerful, joyful statement of thanks and triple-thanks to God. “Holy,
Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts. Heaven and earth are full of Your glory. Hosanna in the
highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.” Holy
means special. Hosanna is another way to ask Jesus to set us free.
Eiucharistic Prayer
- This is the most special part of mass when the bread and wine turn into
the Body and Blood of Jesus.
Mystery of Faith
When the priest says “the mystery of faith”, we respond by SINGING
“Save us, Savior of the world, for Lord, by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free.”
Amen
- When the priest has finished praying thanks, for the Holy Spirit, for Jesus who died
and was resurrected, for us and all the church, for those who have died, for Mary and the
saints, over the Body and Blood of Christ we SING “Amen”.
Communion Rite
The Lord’s Prayer
- We say the special prayer that Jesus shared with His friends.
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.”
Closing
Then the priest says that “Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil, graciously grant
us peace in our day. In your mercy keep us free from sin and protect us from all anxiety as we
wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ”. We say “For the kingdom, the
power and the glory are Yours now and forever.” This acknowledges God’s special holiness and
that we belong to Him.
